The Vogue Festival 2012

| Necklace: Marni for H&M | Lace-Dress: Promod |

London: Today started the first Vogue Festival in association with Vertu at the Royal Geographical Society in London. In total, four half day sessions enable fashion followers to get insight in the exciting careers of designers, journalists, buyers, models or photographers. During as well as between the talks you have access to makeover stations for make up or hair. I decided to go for a quick hair makeover and you can see the result styled by multi-award winning stylist Leigh Keates above. But let's talk fashion! I only attended the first session this morning due to financial budget restrictions in my wallet (each session costs 75.00 £). However, it was quite difficult to decide which session I would like to see as all four sessions had a fantastic line up. In the end I chose the first one.

The first session started with an one hour interview led by British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman with Burberry's creative director Christopher Bailey. Smart, charming, funny... these are the words I like to use when describing the Yorkshireman who successfully transformed Burberry into one of London's leading fashion brands over the past decade. Mr. Bailey also talked about the new Burberry store which will open at London's prestigious Regent Street. This store will be Burberry's largest store worldwide and I am already excited to see it.

After a break, four industry professionals talked about their career starts and how they developed a successful career in the fashion industry. First was lovely Lucinda Chambers who has worked for British Vogue for three decades since 1980. Today she is Vogue's fashion director and collaborates with photographers including Mario Testino, Paolo Roversi and Nick Knight.

Then, British fashion talent Matthew Williamson told his story of how he became interested in fashion and that he had moved from Manchester to London at the age of seventeen in order to study. Unfortunately, his story ended in 1997, when he showcased his debut collection 'Electric Angels' at London Fashion Week as the time was running out. Mr. Williamson promised to tell the second part of his career story at the next Vogue Festival :)

Harrods' chief merchant, Marigay McKee entered the stage next to tell her career story. Who would have thought that Marigay travelled the world as unfashionable teacher? During her stay in New York, the charm of fashionable ladies took over and back in the UK, Marigay started working as a salesperson in a department store. After gaining years of experience, and a promotion to a buyer, she moved back to London and got hired by one the world's leading department stores: Harrods. The rest is history. Today, Marigay is also a board member of the British Fashion Council and chairman of the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund mentoring committee.

Last but definitely not least, Russell Marsh who is one of the world's top model-casting directors gave some insight into his career path. Mr. Marsh has recruited models for labels such as Balenciaga, Dries Van Noten and Christopher Kane. Not enough? Russell can also look back at 16 years experience of collaborating with the Italian fashion house Prada.

The first session of the Vogue Festival ended with a talk between British TV/radio presenter Kirsty Young and Vogue contributing editor on food as well as bestseller cook book author Nigella Lawson. Stunning Nigella answered questions about healthy food, love for cooking and the enjoyment of eating.

In summary, I enjoyed spending the morning at the Vogue Festival 2012 as it was very well organised and timed. The selection of speakers and interview questions allowed me to gain a much deeper understanding of the fashion industry. I would love to come back next year! Well done!

Gute Sache!
